Permitted and Forbidden

Permitted and Forbidden   Islam lays a clear foundation that serves both individuals and society. This foundation is God’s oneness and its correlative: that God alone is the One who deserves to be worshipped and obeyed in all that He commands and legislates. Every Muslim believes in the divine will and whatever it brings. What occurs in your life is inevitable and cannot be avoided, and what you have missed could not have ever been yours.   Every Muslim believes that God knows what benefits him or her most, and what serves human society best. Therefore, a Muslim obeys God, even though His commands may be at variance with their own wishes.   It is a human weakness that many of us imagine that whatever they desire is wholesome and whatever they dislike to be foul. Thus, a person may imagine that using drugs is fine and pleasurable even though it means the loss of rational thinking while under the influence of such drugs. Likewise, a person may imag...

Oneness of Allah, Tawheed, Polytheism, shirk

Image
Oneness of Allah (Tawheed), Polytheism (shirk) A ship that has two captains may end up sinking, so what about the whole universe? Allah says in the Quran, {If there were gods besides Allah in the heavens and the earth, they both would have been ruined.}  (Surah Al-Anbiyah 21:22)   Tawheed is the firm belief that Allah is the only true god who deserves to be worshipped. This means that all acts of worship, whether apparent or hidden, must be directed to Him alone. The Quran states, {Your God is One God. There is no god but Him, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.} (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:163)   The actions of Tawheed are of two kinds   • Outer: Actions or sayings that are apparent to others by being pronounced aloud or done in public, such as: the two testimonies of faith (shahadatain), the prayer, zakat, Hajj, reciting Quran, jihad, slaughtering of animals, swearing oaths, or uttering remembrances of Allah.   • Inner: Hidden actions, say...

Adhan

Image
Adhan (Call to prayer)   The adhan is a call that uses specific words to inform others that the time for salat has begun. It is a call to offer salat in congregation. Adhan is a sunnah for the prescribed prayers, whether they are offered on time or later. It is a sunnah mu’akkadah (stressed or confirmed sunnah). It is kifaya sunnah on the community, which means that it must be done, but the requirement is satisfied if even one of the group performs it. For a person praying individually, it is sunnah ‘ayniyya (sunnah on each person)  Date of its legislation: The adhan was made part of the shariah during the first year after the migration to Madinah.   Proof of its legislation: { O you who believe, when the call for salat is made on Friday, proceed to the remembrance of Allah, and leave the trading behind. That is better for you, if you only knew .} (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 62:9) The Messenger (PBUH) said, “When it is the time for prayer, one of you should...

THE RELIGION OF ADAM AND EVE

Image
THE RELIGION OF ADAM AND EVE     One Religion and One message! Since the creation of Adam and Eve, throughout history, just one true religion with one original message has been delivered repeatedly to humankind. To remind people of it and get them back on track, many prophets and messengers ̶ including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad ̶ were sent by the only true God to convey this message: There is only One True God, Allah the Creator and worship Him alone.   Submission to the Will of Allah (the One true God) is the essence of their message. This word ‘SUBMISSION’ is the meaning of the Arabic word ‘ISLAM’.   The Qur’an confirms that submission to God, or ‘Islam’, is the true religion of Adam and all God’s prophets and messengers.   Similarly, the Bible reports these words which also refer to the meaning of Islam (submission to God): “Submit yourselves therefore to God.” (James 4:7)   The word ‘Muslim’ means a ...

Istinja

Image
Istinja (Cleaning after going to the bathroom)   Istinja’ refers to cleaning the private parts (the two natural orifices); this is wajib (obligatory) after answering the call of nature.   Items permissible to use:   Inherently pure water or any rough solid items which would remove filth, such as stones, tissue paper, etc. It is preferable to clean oneself with a dry stone or tissue and then to use water afterwards because the solid item removes the impurity and then the  water removes any traces left. The private parts should be rinsed an odd number of times, with a minimum of three times.   Items forbidden to use:   It is forbidden to do istinja’ with an impure item, bones (which are the food for jinns), any respectable substance such as part of an animal (that is not cut off) such as the animal’s hand or leg, and of course any human organ because that would be disrespectful. It is lawful to use part of an animal which is cut o...

The Islamic View on Charms

Image
The Islamic View on Charms, Talismans, and Amulets in Islam   It is important for Muslims to understand the issue of wearing amulets and good luck charms so that they can correctly implement the teachings of monotheism ( tawheed ) in their daily life.   Many cultures have practices that involve wearing accessories for good luck, or seeking blessings from objects, in the belief that these objects can ward off evil. Such practices contradict the correct understanding of the attributes of Allah, because only Allah has the absolute power to bring us benefits and to protect from harm.   Allah said: {Say: I have no power at all for myself to harm or benefit except as Allah wills.} (Surah Yunus 10:49)   Believers should place their hope and trust only in Allah to direct destiny towards a good end. People who depend upon amulets, necklaces, trinkets, charms, spells, and the like are placing their ultimate hope and trust in them and ascribing to them at...
